What are Lash extensions ?
A cosmetic procedure in which synthetic fibres are attached to your natural eyelash to enhance their length, thickness, and overall appearance.
Are Lash extensions healthy?
Honesty is important for us at Kat's Eye. As such we think it is essential to say that neither lash extensions nor lash lifts are "treatments" for your natural lashes. We refer to them as a procedure or an enhancement. With lash extensions you are adding weight to your natural lashes and lash lifts break down the disulfide bonds in a chemical procedure.
Luckily, however, like in the hair industry, there are ways to support & nourish your natural lashes. This and an honest rapport with your lash artists will ensure you can wear lash extensions and have lash lifts continuously.
What are Lash extensions made off?
Lash extensions are typically made from synthetic materials such as polyester, silk, or mink. However, it is important to note that silk and mink lashes generally describe certain qualities of extension and are seldom derived from animals. Kat’s Eye only uses synthetic lashes that are man-made.
What happens during the appointment?
Lash extensions are applied individually by a trained technician. The process involves using a specialized adhesive to bond each extension to an individual natural lash, usually starting from the outer corner and working inward.
Are extensions attached to my eyelid?
No, individual lash extensions are not attached to your eyelid or skin. They are placed on your natural lashes .5mm away from your eyelid so that they can fall out together with the natural eyelid and not cause discomfort.
How do I look after them?
To ensure the longevity of your lash extensions, it's important to follow certain maintenance guidelines. These may include avoiding oil-based products near the lashes, refraining from rubbing or pulling your lashes, and regularly cleaning them with a gentle lash cleanser. It is also recommended to avoid hot steam and sleeping on your face.
How long do extension last?
Lash extensions typically last for several weeks but they naturally shed along with your natural lashes. Depending on your growth cycle and age you can loose between 2-5 natural lashes per eye per day and if these natural lashes have extensions attached you will loose them. Individual results may vary, and the retention of lash extensions depends on factors such as your lash growth cycle, aftercare routine, and the skill of your technician.
What is an Infill or Refill?
If you want to maintain the fullness of your lash extensions over time, you can opt for infills. Infill appointments involve adding new extensions to the regrowth of your natural lashes, replacing the ones that have shed. Generally, Infill appointments are scheduled every 2-3 weeks.
Why do you need to have regular Infills/ Refills?
During an infill/refill not only do we add new extensions onto the regrowth, we also take outgrown lashes off. Outgrown extensions are becoming bouncy and the weight of the extension will distribute differently to the natural lash causing the natural lash to drag down and putting stress onto the follicle.
Can I have an allergy and sensitivity to lash extensions?
Yes, some individuals may be allergic or sensitive to the adhesive used in lash extensions or other products used during the application. Usually an allergic reaction will show within 76 hours of the procedure. Typical signs can be swollen eyelids or/ and a rash and itchiness and a consultation with your doctor is recommended. It’s essential to communicate any allergies or concerns to your lash technician before the application process to minimize the risk of adverse reactions. Allergic reactions can happen at any stages in life, even to long term extension wearers. You may want to try our LED curing technology.
Can I use Mascara on my lash extensions?
One of the advantages of lash extensions is that you can achieve a fuller lash look without the need for mascara. In fact, it's generally recommended to avoid using mascara on lash extensions, especially waterproof formulas, as they can weaken the adhesive bond and cause premature shedding.
What length & thickness do you use?
Lash extensions come in various lengths, ranging from 5mm to 17mm or more. The thickness of the extensions also varies, with options like natural, medium, and dramatic, allowing for customizable looks. At Kat’s Eye we stock B, C, D, L and M curls in thicknesses from .03mm to .20mm and lengths from 5mm to 14mm.
Can anyone wear lash extensions?
Yes, lash extensions are suitable for all eye shapes and ages: Lash extensions can be tailored to complement different eye shapes, whether you have almond-shaped eyes, hooded eyes, or any other eye shape. At Kat’s Eye we will consider your eye shape and desired outcome always together with the health of your natural lashes to create a customised look.
How do you customise lash extension?
Lash extensions come in various lengths, thicknesses, and curls to suit different eye shapes and personal preferences. During your appointment, you can discuss the desired look with your Lash artist who will help select the most suitable extensions for you. Contrary to common believe a dark lash line is not achieved by using the longest lash extensions.
Why do you recommend to wash you lash extensions regularly?
Washing lash extensions is recommended to maintain their cleanliness and to promote overall lash health.
Sebum, oil, dirt, and Makeup can weaken the adhesive bond of lash extensions, leading to premature shedding. Additionally, cosmetic products, such as mascara or eyeliner, over time can build up on lash extensions, altering their appearance and making them appear clumpy or dull. By washing your lashes regularly, you can remove these impurities, keeping your lashes clean and ensuring better retention.
The eye area between the adhesive point and the eye lit is susceptible to bacteria, which can potentially lead to infections. Washing your lash extensions helps reduce the risk of bacteria buildup, keeping your lash line hygienic and minimizing the chance of eye-related issues.
At Kat’s Eye we will wash your lashes for you before every appointment to ensure your lashes are clean and extensions can adhere to your natural lashes and not the built up.
Why do I loose more extensions when I have a new set?
Here are some reasons:
1. Your natural lashes follow a growth cycle, with each lash having its own growth phase. As part of this cycle, natural lashes naturally shed and are replaced by new ones. When you get a new set of lash extensions, the added weight of the extensions can sometimes accelerate the shedding process of the natural lashes. This can lead to the appearance of more lost extensions initially.
2. It’s common for your natural lashes to go through an adjustment period after getting a new set of extensions. Your lash follicles and lash line need to acclimate to the added weight and presence of the extensions. During this period, it's possible for some extensions to loosen or shed more easily as the adhesive settles and the lashes find their balance.
3. You as a client also have to adjust to wearing lash extensions. Unintentional rubbing of eye takes often a little bit of adjusting. We experienced this with our clients especially after the Covid lockdowns.
Our recommendation is to try and check the extension when it falls out:
Has it got the natural lash attached? That is totally normal.
Has it got NO natural lashes attached? Do check with your lash technician.
It's important to note that some initial extension loss is normal, and everyone's lash retention can vary. However, if you feel that you are experiencing excessive extension loss or have concerns, it's best to consult with your lash technician.
What are Classic lash extensions?
This refers to a lash extension technique that involves applying one individual lash extension to one natural eyelash. The goal of classic lash extensions is to enhance the length and thickness of your natural lashes while maintaining a natural and subtle look. Usually thicker extensions are being used. At Kat’s Eye we use .10mm, .15mm, .20mm thickness as a flat lash to ensure the lightest wearing experience. The overall look can be described as more defined than volume or mascara look.
What are Russian Volume lash extensions?
A lash extension technique that involves applying 2-6 fine & thinner lash extensions to each natural lash. The extensions are handcrafted into fans before being applied to the single natural lash. This technique generally creates a more voluminous and dramatic look compared to classic lash extensions. Depending on the thickness of the extensions however also volume lashes can look very natural and are also recommended for clients with sparse natural lashes or weak natural lashes. At Kat’s eye we use the following thicknesses for Russian Volume: .05mm, .06mm or .07mm. Usually Russian Volume lashes with handcrafted fans have better retention than classic lashes or pre-made fans. They can also be more customised to the the individual natural lash because the number of lash extensions in each fan can be adjusted to achieve the desired level of fullness, ranging from 3D (three extensions per fan) to 6D (six extensions per fan) or even more. The higher the number, the more dramatic the effect.
What is Mega Volume?
Mega volume lashes, also known as 9D-16D lashes, is an advanced lash extension technique that offers the highest level of volume and dramatic effect. It involves applying an extremely dense and voluminous set of lash extensions to each natural lash. Despite the high volume and density, mega volume lashes are crafted using ultra-fine lash extensions. These extensions are often thinner and lighter in weight compared to classic or Russian volume lashes. At Kat’s Eye we use .03mm or .05mm thick extensions. Due to the intricate nature of mega volume lashes, the application process can be more time-consuming compared to other lash extension techniques. It's important to consider the health and strength of your natural lashes when opting for mega volume lashes. The weight and density of these lashes may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with naturally thin or weak lashes.
What is Cashmere Ellipse Volume lash extensions?
A relatively new volume lash procedure where we use ultra fine Cashmere Ellipse lashes. At Kat’s eye we use .07mm and .10mm thickness to create Cashmere Ellipse volume.
Cashmere lashes refer to a type of synthetic lash material that is ultra-soft, lightweight and comfortable to wear. They are designed to mimic the softness and texture of natural lashes, providing a more natural look and feel.
Ellipse-Shaped Base: The ellipse-shaped base refers to the bottom part of the lash extension. Unlike traditional round-shaped bases, the ellipse-shaped base has a flat, wider design. Because of that the lashes appear thicker but are often half the weight of their round-shaped based friends meaning with less lashes and weight we can achieve a blacker, darker denser look compared to the traditional Russian Volume. The flat ellipse-shaped base of Cashmere Ellipse Volume Extensions provides a larger contact area for the adhesive, leading to improved bonding and better retention. This can result in longer-lasting lash extensions compared to traditional round-shaped bases.
At Kat’s Eye most clients now prefer Cashmere Ellipse Volume above all other volume, which is why we named it The Popular.
